yesterday was a great day in la fortuna, costa rica. we slept in, ate a empenada, and booked a tour of the nearby volcano. we basically killed time in the small town by walking around in the rain, playing gin rummy, which im not as good at as i thought i was or its much more up to luck that i would like, and eating more. around 330 we set off with a few other travelers to the base of the mountain and with a trusty tour guide in the lead, we set of through the jungle. it was fantastic, really what we were looking for in terms of geting right into it and seeing what costa rica is known for. the tour was also about seeing wildlife and we saw not as much as we'd like but still plenty. we saw different types of monkeys, parrots, tucans, and insects. i even got some decent but not great pictures of ants carrying pieces of leaves to their nest. pretty cool to see that party train. the hike was great also, the forest was damp but not rainy adn it was green everywhere. it reminded me of when i hiked through mt reinier national park except the species of everything was different. we parked our keesters around sunset to see if the volcano was going to do anthing but it was overcast and the tip was covered by a cloud so we ended up jsut sitting ther for about 30 minutes. after taht we continued on our way and were met by a sudden and massive downpour. i had wisely chosen to not bring a raincoat thinking that in the rainforest country, they would be abundent and cheap. i was incorrect and thus soaked. we dashed to our van and waited out the rain. when it stopped, it was nighttime and the volcano was beginning to make some noise. at first it was a low rumble, and then we could hear some real pops but it was far enough away that there wasnt any real big explosions. then the lava started coming out but instead fo a steady flow like expected it was jsut bright red rocks tumbling out of the darkness into the similar darkness fo the mountainside. and they would smash on the ground and burst into smaller but equally bright red rocks and then eventually cool off and disapear in the darkness. it was very cool to watch. after teh lava watching, we went to a touristy hot springs and soaked for a few hours. some of the pools were nice and at a good temperature and others felt like they were straight out fo the volcano. and then the sauna was more like a room in a texan summer without air conditioning. but it was nice nonetheless. after the springs we went home and with a beer at dinner, were ready for bed.
we got up this morning at 7 to catch a bus to Montevista. its a mountain town also knwn for its sights. we were told to use the jeebojee which neither of us understood. so we went around town looknig for this jeebojee and discovered that what people were telling us was to get on the jeep-boat-jeep ride which made a lot more sense. we found what they were talking about and it was a great way to travel. we, along with many others crowded into this tourist jeep, took it about 30 minuets to Arenal Lake and then got in a boat that ook us across the whole lake. it was an amazing ride because everythign around us was mountains covered in green and occasionally a farm or a house build up on the peak of the mountain.. then we tok another jeep along a road that resembled a cobbleston path except you have to replace every other cobble stone wiht dirt or mud or puddle, and the rest of the cobblestones with randomly sized rockes that didnt fit the road. it was bumpy. we got to the mountain town and were immediately surruonded by more offers of great deals. we chose to do some investigating and found a place that worked out well.
this afternoon we took a zip line tour through the canopy jungle and it was really aamzing. after a brief safety lesson, we were harnessed to the wire cord and flying through the trees. all ni all there were about 16 different lines ranging from about 50 yards long to as lnog as 1000 yards. those long ones were from one peak of the rainforest to another peak and we flew over these massive valleys. there were gusts of wind that knocked us around and slowed us down but we made it with a little army action hand over hand. it was very cool to see the forest from above and be able to see just how big it is.
