crazy first day. we left los angeles late dec 5th and got into san jose, costa rica early dec 6th. we had both slept minimally on the plane but were wide awake when we stepped off the plane and were blown away by the scenery. flying in we saw the ocean and the mountains and the greenery but when we landed, we saw just how beautiful this place was. everything is lush and green. it was sunny, about 75 degrees, and there was a cool breeze. we got our bags, changed some money, and when we exited the airport, there came the offers. taxi, taxi, you need a taxi. good price, where you wanna go? etc.
but we're on a tight budget and were both jewish so the 12 dollar taxi ride was a bit pricey for these two travelers. we found the city bus and payed 60 cents to take it into downtown san jose. from there we hired a taxi to take us to the bus station, bought a 3 dollar ticket to take us across the country, and grabbed a small snack so fatty wouldnt complain all afternoon about being hungry. the snack was great: fresh pork taco with local hot sauce and a coke all for a dollar. you knew i couldnt talk about food without descibing it, come on people.
the bus ride reminded me of my fetal days in the womb for a few reasons. first, while the bus ride started with me and fatty each having our own row and plenty of room, it soon became crowded so much so that for a majority of the 5 hour bus ride, people were standing in the aisles being knocked around and falling over each other. and then of course there was the time when i was reading my book, casually looked to my left and the woman sitting next to me was breast feeding her child. like i said, very reminiscent of my youth. so that was humerous.
so the bus ride was what we payed for but it got the job done. when we arrived in la fortuna, we were again hounded by offers of great deals and low prices. we stepped aside to discuss but were still hounded. we eventually negotiated what we thought was a good deal and accepted one mans offer for a 6 dollar hostel. we were finally able to put our things down and ourselves as well and relax for the first time on our short trip. we decided to see what fun things the town had to offer besides the obvious volcano that sits just north of the small town. we got offers for canopy tours, ATV tours, white water rafting tours, and of course volcano tours. but everything was a bit more than we expected in terms of price. we have budgeted for about 50 bucks a day and most of the tours were about that much. so we decided to do just the typical volcano tour, save the rainforrest for another day, and we're probably moving on out of this town tomorrow.
well time is running out on this computer so i believe ill come back another day. please everyone keep in touch and let me know how things are going back state-side. adios
