2006 is not even a day old and i have just received the news that the horse i rode into a ditch in Colombia has died due to an infection in the wound he suffered. apparently he was recovering well and then yesterday marcela and her cousins were going into town to get medicine for it and when her aunt called to tell her about the turn for the worse, they instead got 3 men to help dig a grave and bury the beast. it wasnt an easy task as the horse outsized the hole by a good amount so they had to alter the horses body structure with official horse altering devices (a machete). sounded pretty awful and i feel bad that i was partly responsible for his demise. so that is sad but were moving on...
speaking of which, we moved out of the nice hotel today and into a backpackers hostel in the art district called Barranco. like i said earlier, the place is very similar to the hostel we stayed at in panama with a great vibe and fun people to talk to. within 2 hours of being here, we got one of the most important pieces of information so far on this trip. weve been worried about eating vegatables and whatnot because were afraid of the pesticides or overall cleanliness of them. but a friend told us that if you buy limes and spray the juice on your food before the meal, the citric acid kills the bacteria and youre good to go. doctors, please let me know if this is a bogus solution because i have a perfect track record so far with the stomach and dont want to break it. this guy also offered to tear out teh chapters about chile and argentina from his travel book for us because he is finished wit hthem and knows how useful they would be for us. very nice chap.
new years went by relatively uneventfully. unfortunate but it just wasnt going to be crazy. we ate a late dinner, drank a little before going out to this same hostel for a party, and then around 2 went to the bars. the only thing to note about the night were the games of doubles ping pong that we played using the previously described yellow styrofoam hats. one team was dominating the competition so i vowed to break their record. i failed and became another victim in their long line of victories.
not much else to report as of today. were going to be in lima for a few days at least until the 5th so we can watch the national championship game in a big city. then were goign to try to go to a small town known for its sand dune surfing. after that probably souther peru for the lake titicaca district. after that were going to try to get to Buenos Aires as soon as possible because weve heard nothing but good things about the place adn we want to have a fair amount of time to relax and enjoy the city and surrounding area. we just have to be there before the 24th cause were leaving for Rio on that day and dont want to miss our plane.
thanks again to you frequent emailers out there. you dont know how much i enjoy sitting down and seeing a full inbox. keeps me connected with all of you back home. let me know of any good new years stories or any nemon stories. those are my favorite. miss you all, except you lev.
