Sabaai dii

And so we made our way into Laos and have loved every minute since. Laos is such a nice country, I have fallen in love with it. The towns and scenery are lovely, the people really warm and friendly, it's still fairly untouristy and unbelievably cheap.
From Chiang Mai it took 3 daysto get to Luang Prabang, in the north of Laos. The first day we took a minibus to the Thai / Lao border, which means the Mekong river. After staying the night there, we crossed the river the next morning and found ourselves in Laos. Instantly you got the impression things were not only less developed, but alos a lot more laid back. The first noveltywas to change some money. The Kip was devalued a few years ago, so US$ 1 is now 10500 kip, which means we are millionaires here. The funny thing is that the biggest banknote is a 20000, which means everybody carries the money in plastic bags. You have bundles of it everywhere. We try to pay with Thai Baht, but since you get the change in Kip. your packets fill up quickly. Once we cler immigration we board the longboat that will take us down the river to LP. Considering they do this everyday, it was as unorganised as it could be, but finally everyone was on board and a mere 2 hours later, they even got the engine to start and we were on our way. You sit on these spectacularly uncomfortable tiny wooden benches and just let the world pass by. Along the river we see water buffalos, fishermen, villages and everything is bathed in a hazy light, which is a result of the constant forest burning in this area. After 8 hours, just before it got dark, we stop in the tiny village of Pakbeng, which caters for all the overnight stops. It must be the sleepiest village in the day time, but at night all the guesthouses and restaurant are busy and trying to get our business. They only have electricity in the afternoon, so when we arrive the village is bathed in the light of candles. You just somehow get the feeling people are quite happy and laid back, despite all the poverty and I am beginning to really like Laos.
The next day we are back on the boat for another 8 hours of trying to find a comfortable position. As far as the boat journey goes, everyone agrees that it sounded more romantic on paper, and we are glad to make it to Luang Prabang, where we spent the next 3 days. It's got to be the loveliest place we have been to in Asia so far. The town lies between 2 rivers and is an ancient capital filled with wats (Temples). We spend our days riding a bike around town, stopping at a few wats, chatting to the monks or just exploring the narrow side streets. At night we have some lovely food and stroll over the night market. Again everything is subtly lit and vendors sell great textiles and clothes and crafts. The market is so typical for Laos. Unlike any normal market in the world, it is quite and serene. Apart from a friendly smile and "Sabaai dii" (Hello) noone tries to grab you or shout about their goods. Even when you ride back to the guesthouse down some dark streets at night, you feel perfectly safe and happy. Laos has only ben open for tourism since 1999 and you can easily see, how it will be getting very busy in the future, it's such a great place. Onemorning we get up early to watch the morning alms, where the monks collect their daily food from the local people, another time we are invited to join the monks in the temple to observe the afternoon chanting. Whilst chilling out in the Royal Palace Gardens one lunchtime, a couple of localkids join us, knowing that we would have a digital camera. They learn to use it better after 5 minutes then Wilf after 1 year and just can't get enough of looking at themselves on screen. All good things have to come to an end though, and we have to leave, convinced that we will be back. If you ever feel really stressed out, come here for a week and just chill out. It's perfect!!

Und so machen wir uns auf den Weg nach Laos und haben seitdem jede Minute genossen. Loas ist so ein tolles Land, ich habe mich direkt in das Land verliebt. Die Stadte und Landschaft sind bezauberns, die Leute freundlich und warmherzig und es ist noch ziemlich untouristisch und unglaublig billig. Von Chiang Mai hat es 3 Tage gedauert um nach Luang Prabang, im Norden des Landes, zu gelangen.Am ersten Tag sind wir mit einem Minibus zur Thailand / Laos Grenze gefahren, die vom Mekong gebildet wird. Nachdem wir dort die Nacht verbracht haben, haben wir am Morgen zur anderen Seite uebergesetzt und waren in Laos. Man hatte sofort den Eindruck, dass es hier nicht nur weniger entwickelt , sondern auch viel entspannter ist. Die erste witzige Sache war, Geld zu tauschen. Der Kip wurde vor ein paar Jahren entwertet und nun ist US$1 gleich 10500 Kip, was bedeutet, dass wir hier Millionaire sind. Das lustige ist, dass die groesste Banknote 20000 ist, was bedeutet das jeder sein Geld in Plastikbeuteln rumtraegt. Man hat ueberall Buendel von Geld. Wir versuchen in Thailaendischen Baht zu zahlen, aber da man Wechselgeld immer in Kip bekommt, hat man die Taschen schnell voll. Nachdem wir durch die Grenzkontrolle waren,, gings auf das Longboat, dass uns nach Luang Prabang bringen sollte. Wenn man bedenkt, dass sie dass taeglich machen, war es echt chaotisch, aber irgendwann waren dann alle auf dem Boot und 2 Stunden spaeter ist dann sogar der Motor angesprungen und wir waren unterwegs. Man sitzt auf unglaublch unbequemen, winzigen Holzbaenken und laesst die Welt an einem vorbeiziehen. Am Flussufer sieht man Buffalos, Fischerleute, Doerfer und alles ist in einem dunstigen Licht gebadet, das von dem vielen Waldbraenden in der gegend kommt. Nach 8 Stunden, und kurz vorm Dunkeln, machten wir in Pakbeng, einem winzigen Dorf, dass fuer die Uebernachtung aufkommt, halt. Es muss tagsueber das vertraeumteste Dorf sein, aber abends ist ein richtiger Rummel und alle Gasthaeuser und Restaurant, kaempfen um deine Aufmerksamkeit. Es gibt nur nachmittags Strom, und so ist das Dorf in Kerzenlicht gebadet. Man hat das Gefuehl, dass die Menschen trotz aller Armut, gluecklich und entspannt sind und ich fange an, das Land richtig gern zu haben.
Am naechsten Tag verbringen wir wieder 8 Stunden auf dem Boot und versuchen eine bequeme Position zu finden. Wenn man nur die Bootsfahrt betrachtet, stimmen alle ueberein, dass sich das auf papier irgendwie romantischer angehoert hat, und man ist froh, wenn man endlich in Luang Prabang ankommt, wo wirdie naechsten 3 Tage verbrachten. Es muss die schoenste Stadt in Asien sein, zumindestens bis jetzt. Sie leigt zwischen 2 Fluessen und ist eine uralte Hauptstadt voller Wats (Tempel). Wir verbrachten unsere Tage damit mit Fahrraedern die Stadt zu erkunden, bei ein paar Wats anzuhalten, mit den Moenchen zu quasseln oder einfach die Gassen zu erkunden. Abends haben wir lecker gegessen und sind ueber den Nachtmarkt gelaufen. Auch hier ist alles sanft beleuchtet und die Verkaeufer bieten Textilien und Souveniers an. Der Markt ist so richtig typisch fuer Laos. Im gegensatz zu jedem anderem Markt auf der Welt, ist es total ruhig und gelassen. Von einem freundlichen Laecheln und "Sabaai dii" (Hallo) versucht niemand dich zu greifen oder ueber ihre Gueter zu schreien. Selbst wenn man abends durch die dunklen Strassen zum Gasthaus zurueckkehrt, fuehlt man sich vollkommen sicher und zufrieden. Laos wurde erst 1999 fuer Tourismus geoeffnet und man kann sich leiht vorstellen, dass es in Zukunft sehr beliebt sein wird. Es ist so ein tolles Land. An einem Morgen sind wir fruehaufgestanden, um zuzuschauen wie die Moenche ihr taegliches Essen von den Einheimischen einsammeln. Ein anderes mal wurden wir eingeladen, den Moenchen im Tempel bei ihrem nachmittaeglichen Gesang zuzuschauen. Und als wir einen Nachmittag im Garten des koeniglichen Palastes ausruhen, kommen 2 kleine Jungs zu uns, weil sie wissen, dass wir bestimmt eine Digital-Kamera haben. Nach 5 Minuten kennen sie sie besser bedienen, als Wilf nach einem Jahr und koennen gar nicht genugdavon kriegen, sich auf dem Bildschirm anzusehen. Aber alles gute muss einmal enden und wir mussten weiterziehen, allerdings mit der Uberzeugung eines Tages wieder zu kommen. Wenn sich jemand mal richtig im Stress fuehlt, sollte er fuer eine Woche hier her kommen und entspannen. Es ist perfekt!!
