Helihiking

Time to move on and we drove to Frans Joseph Glacier on the West Coast. Yet again we were told, that we had just missed the good weather and a really bad front was visibly nearing and was expected to stay for a few days. This was really bad news, as we had wanted to do a helihike and the helicopters can't go in bad visibility. However there was one last trip out that afternoon, so we raced to the office and within 20 minutes of arriving in town we were loaded into a helicopter. This was always one of the things on our "must do" list and how cool is it to fly in a helicopter. When it just lifted off the ground and swooped up on the near vertical glacier wall, we had big grins on our face. The walk on the glacier was unexpectedly spiky. We were wriggling through narrow ice caves, at one stage we had to slide through on our stomachs. Not for the claustrophobic, I can tell you. Even Wilf was glad to get out on the other end. Great fun though and we were glad to have had a chance to do it. The weather now took a really nasty turn and we left the next morning. For the next 2 days we drove up the West Cost on our way north and stopped at a couple of minor towns, the most noteworthy Greymouth, where we went to the Monteith Brewery tour. It was quite intereting, although the biggest attraction was the free beer tasting at the end of it. Strangely enough there was a family from Cheadle Hulme there who walk their dog on the same field as we walk Spencer and we recognised each other by describing our dogs. How weird!! It's a small world...

Es war Zeit weiter zu ziehen und wir fuhren zum Franz Joseph Gletscher an der Westkueste. Hier wurde uns mal wieder erzaehlt, dass wir gearde das gute Wetter verpasst haben, und eine dunkle Front naeherte sich sichtbar am Horizont und sollte fuer ein paar Tage bleiben. Das waren schlechte Neuigkeiten, weil wir unbedingt einen Helihike machen wollten, und die Hubschrauber bei schlechtem Wetter nicht fliegen. Es gab an dem tag allerdings noch einen Flug und wir rannten schnell zu dem Buchungsbuero und nachdem wir mal gerade 20 Minuten in der Stadt waren, sassen wir auch schon im Hubschrauber. das war immer schon was, was hoch auf unserer "muss man mal erlebt haben" Liste stand, und als der Hubschrauber abhob und die fast vertikale Gletscherwand hoch stieg, waren unsere Gesichter nur noch ein fettes Grinsen! Die Wanderung auf dem Gletscher war unerwartet uneben. Wir kletterten ueber Huegel und quetschten uns durch Eishoehlen. Bei einer mussten wir uns auf dem Bauch durchschlengeln. Das war nichts fuer Leute mit Platzangst, das kann ich Euch versichern. Selbst Wilf war sichtlich erleichtert, als er am anderen Ende rauskam. Es hat Spass gemacht und wir waren echt froh die Gelegenheit bekommen zu haben. Am Abend wurde das Wetter dann naemlich so richtig schlecht, so dass wir am naechsten Morgen gleich weitergezogen sind. Die naechsten 2 tage folgten wir der Westkueste auf unserem Weg in den Norden und machten bei ein paar minderen Sehenswuerdigkeiten halt. Das erwaehnenswerteste war die Monteith Brauerei Tour in Greymouth. Es war sehr interessant, obwohl der Hoehepunkt natuerlich die kostenlose Bierverkostung zum Schluss war. Komischerweise haben wir dort eine Familie aus Cheadle Hulme getroffen, die mit ihrem Hund in dem selben Park wie wir mit Spencer spazierengehen. Nach Beschreibung unserer Hunde kamen wir uns dann auch bekannt vor. Schon komisch ! Die Welt ist so klein...
