The big nothingness / Das grosse Nichts

After spending a lazy day in Esperance, we drove to the Cape le Grand National Park the next day. The scenery here was stunning. Beautiful coastline, kangaroos hopping around and not a soul in sight. What a shame that it is too cold to make the moct of the white beaches. Oh and then there are the sharks of course. Never mind! Before we left Esperance we visited the annual show which happened to be held while we were there. We had a great time being part of something so rural. There were exibits of all kinds (from sheep wool to cakes and art made from egg shells). There were so many categories that it seemed like everyone in the town won some kind of price. Then there was sheep ram and bull competitions, a chicken show, the latest in agricultural machinery a fair ground and to finish it off a really good firework display. After all that excitement it was time for the big nothingness, that is the 2000km drive across the Nullabor. Nullabor means "no trees" and so we spend 3 days driving across this unbelievably flat landscape with only a petrol station every 200km to interupt it. At the end of this flat nothingness the land dropped into the sea. The cliffs were up to 90m high and quite impressive. As was the noises the dingos made at night. Most scared I have been in our tent in a long time!
At the end of it lay the town of Port Augusta where we stopped for what we call an office day (washing, shopping etc) and then headed north into the Flinders Ranges, a beautiful mountain range. We went for a few walks to take in the scenery, not letting the black clouds and thousands of flies deterr us, and camped in the middle of nowhere.
Time seems to fly all of the sudden and a couple of days later we find ourselves in Adelaide. On the drive down here the scenery has changed to endless fields of wheat and the towns have a more historical and old feel to them. there are some really pretty villages and a lot of German heritage, which is great for the soul but bad for the waist. We are now regulars at Cafe Anders, working our way through their cakes. We are based in Glenelg, a seaside subburb of Adelaide and haven't actually made it into the city yet, but from what I have seen so far, it seems a really nice town. Today we are having a lazy day of cake, internet, pub to watch the cricket and read the papers, more cake, cinema and maybe a nice curry if there is still room. Got to grab the benefits of civilisation when you can!!

PS: I forgot to mention Magnetic Hill on the way to Adelaide. You park your car at the bottom of the hill and it rolls up hill unaided, as if pulled by a big magnet. Wilf was waffeling on about optical illusions, but I would like to think it's magic!

Nachdem wir einen faulen Tag in Esperance verbracht hatten, fuhren wir am naechsten tag zum Cape le Grand Nationalpark. Die Landschaft hier war wunderschoen. Tolle Kuestenlandschaft, ueberall huepften die Kangaruhs rum und weit und breit keine Menschenseele. Nur ein Jammer, dass es zu kalt ist, um die weissen Straende richtig auszunutzen. Und dann waeren da noch die Haie.. Na ja macht nichts! Bevor wir Esperance verlassen haben, haben wir noch die alljaehrliche Show besucht, die zufaellig gerade lief. Es hat echt Spass gemacht, so etwas richtig laendliches mitzuerleben. Erst einmal gab es lauter Austellungen (von Schafwolle, ueber Kuchen bis zu Gebastelten Sachen aus eierschalen). Es schien so viele Kategorien zu geben, dass es uns vorkam, als ob jeder Einheimische mindestens einen Preis eingeheimst haben muss. Dann gab es Zuchtbullen und Scafbock Wettbewerbe, eine Gefluegelausstellung, die neuesten Landwirtschaftsmaschinen, einen Rummel und zum kroenenden Abschluss ein richtig gutes Feuerwerk. Nach all der Aufregung war es Zeit fuer das grosse Nichts, der 2000km langen Fahrt durch die Nullabor Ebene. Nullabor heisst "ohne Baeume", und so fuhren wir halt die naechsten 3 Tage durch diese unglaublich flache Gegend, die nur alle 200km von einer Tankstelle unterbrochen wurde. Am Ende dieser Ebene fiel das Land foermlich ins Wasser. Die Kliffen waren bis zu 90m hoch und sehr beeindruckend. Genau wie die Geraeusche der Dingos in der Nacht. So viel Angst hatte ich in unserem kleinen Zelt lange nicht! Am Ende der Reise fanden wir die Stadt port Augusta, wo wir einen Buerotag, wie wir sie nennen, hatten, d.h. Waesche waschen, einkaufen usw. Und dann gings Richtung Norden zu den Flinders Ranges, einer Bergkette, die wir zu Fuss und mit Auto erkundet haben. Wir haben ein paar Wanderungen gemacht, um die Landschaft richtig zu sehen, und ahben uns nicht mal von den schwarzen Gewitterwolken und tausenden Fliegen abhalten lassen. Abends haben wir mitten im nirgendwo gezeltet.
Die Zeit scheint auf einmal davon zu fleigen und so sind wir 2 Tage spaeter auf einmal in Adelaide. Auf dem weg hier her wechselte die Landschaft zu endlosen weizenfeldern und die Staedte haben einen alteren und kulturelleren Character mit vielen huebschen Haeusern und deutscher Geschichter. das ist zwar gut fuer die Seele aber schlecht fuer die Taille. Wir sind mittlerweile Stammkunden im Cafe Anders und essen systematisch alle Kuchensorten durch. Wir wohnen in Glenelg, einem Kuestenvorort von Adelaide, und waren noch nicht in der eigentlichen Stadt, aber was ich bis jetzt gesehen habe, gefaellt mir sehr. Heute machen wir uns einen fauelen Tag: Kuchen, Internet, Pub zum Cricket kucken und Zeitung lesen, mehr Kuchen, Kino und wenns noch reinpasst ein Curry. Man muss die Vorteile der Zivilisation schliesslich nutzen, wenn man sie schon mal hat!

PS: Ich habe vergessen Magnetic Hill auf dem Weg nach Adelaide zu erwaehnen. Man parkt sein Auto am Fusse des Berges und es rollt von ganz allein den Berg hoch, als wenn es von einem Magneten angezogen wird. Wilf hat irgendwas von optischer Taeuschung gefaselt, aber ich moechte einfach an den Zauber glauben!
