Fraser & Whales

The next day we got on a ferry to Fraser Island, the biggest sand island in the world where we drove along the beaches and crossed the little creeks flowing to the sea,all day. This was one of the reassons why we wanted a 4 wheel drive, so we didn't rely on a big group and could go where we pleased. It seems I have been getting more adventurous through travelling. While Wilf was apprehensive about getting stuck and Kerstin was holding on for dear life as the car was jumping over all the bumps and creeks, I thought it was a great adventure. It wasn't have as smooth as it looked, but we made it to the camp site by about lunch time and spend the rest of the afternoon on the beach. As the options on Fraser Island, a pure outdoor destination, were limited to camping, organised trips or posh hotels, we went for camping. But the night proved to be colder than expected and a bit too much for my sister who hasn't been camping since she was 14. Anyhow we all made it and we had a great day driving around the inland sand tracks, through huge forrest and stopped at Lake Mackenzie, a beautiful crystal clear lake with a beautiful white beach. Later that day we caught the ferry back to Hervey Bay, cleaned all the sand off Syd, put the tyre pressure back up to road conditions and civilisation had us back. Hervey Bay is not only on the tourist map as a gateway to Fraser Island, but is a prime spot for whale watching, because Humpback Whales stop in the bay every year to break the long journey from and to Antarctica. Needless to say we booked ourselves on a tour and despite a guarantee of the operator that we would see whales, we had our doubts as we kept scanning the horizon. But sure enough after about an hour 2 whales had spotted us (rather than us them) and came up to the boat to check us out and played around the boat for ages. Once we had seen them, there seemed to be whales everywhere and our boat followed different pods and we were rewarded by one whale breaching clear out of the water. On the way back we saw a sea turtle and had had a really successful day. As there was not much more to do in Hervey Bay we went on the biggest drive of the trip so far and headed for the warmer climes of Airlie Beach on the Whitsunday Coast. On the way we were happy to have seen some live roos, because on the 880km trip we counted exactly 106 dead kangaroos.

Am naechsten Tag nahmen wir eine Faehre nach Fraser Island, der groessten Sandinsel der Welt, und fuehren den ganzen Tag am Strand entlang und ueberquerten die vielen kleinen Fluesse, die in das Meer laufen. Das war geanu einer der Gruende warum wir unbedingt einen 4 Rad Antrieb wollten, so dass wir ohne grosse Gruppe einfach los konnten. Es scheint, als ob ich durch das Reisen abenteuerlustiger geworden bin. Waehrend Wilf Angst hatte, stecken zu bleiben und Kerstin sich ueber die vielen Huckel und Fluesse einfach nur festgehalten hat, fand ich es ein tolles Abenteuer. Das ganze war nicht halb so eben, wie es aus sah, aber mittags haben wir den Zeltplatz erreicht und haben den Nachmittag am Strand verbracht. Da die Moeglichkeiten auf Fraser Island, einem "Natur pur" Ziel auf zelten, organisierte Gruppenreisen oder vornehme Hotels begrenzt waren, entschieden wir uns fuers zelten. Aber die Nacht war kaelter als erwartet, und etwas viel fuer meine Schwester, die mit 14 das letzte mal zelten war. Aber wir haben es alle ueberlebt und am naechsten Tag sind wir die tollen Sandwege durch hohe Waelder im Inneren der Insel entlang gefahren und haben bei Lake Mackenzie, einem kristallklaren See mit einem wunderschoenen weissen Strand halt gemacht. Am spaeten Nachmittag nahmen wir die Faehre nach Hervey Bay,putzten den Sand von Syd ab, erhoehten den Reifendruck wieder fuer normale Strassen und die Zivilisation hatte uns wieder. Hervey Bay ist nicht nur als Ausgangsort fuer Fraser Island auf der Touristenkarte, sondern auch als perfekter Ort, Wale zu sehen, die in der Bucht jedes Jahr auf dem Weg von und nach Antartica Stop machen. Selbstverstaendlich haben wir auch so eine Tour gebucht. Trotz der Garantie des Veranstalters, dasss wir Wale sehen werden, hatten wir unsere Zweifel und konzentrierten uns auf den Horizont. Aber nach einer Stunde hatten uns tatsaechlich 2 Wale entdeckt (statt wir sie) und kamen zum Boot rueber um uns auszukundschaften und ewig neben dem Boot zu spielen. Kaum hatten wir die zwei entdeckt, schien es vor Waalen zu wimmeln und wir verfolgten nach und nach verschiedene Gruppen und wurden belohnt, als ein Wal nicht weit vom Boot glatt aus dem Wasser schoss. Auf dem Rueckweg sahen wir auch noch eine Schildkroete und hatten einen sehr erfolgreichen Ausflug. Da es in Hervey Bay nicht viel mehr zu tun gab, machten wir uns auf die bisher laengste Fahrt auf der Suche nach waermeren Wetter in Airlie Beach an der Whitsundaykueste. Unterwegs waren wir froh, in Brisbane Kangaroos gesehen zu haben, denn auf der 880km Strecke zaehlten wir am Strassenrand exakt 106 tote Kangaroos.
