Godstone farm - lots of piggies

Piggy facts (or everything you ever wanted to know about our porcine pals but were too prissy to ask):

• Pigs have 15,000 taste buds in their tongues, humans only have 9,000.  Perhaps this is why they eat so much, or maybe we have just bred them to get fat as quickly as possible...
• A pig can be trained to understand verbal commands faster than both a dog or a horse - taking only a couple of weeks to understand most commands.  They are said to be quite intelligent animals.
  
• Pigs like to wallow in mud because it keeps their skin cool and protected from sun - a bit like sunblock.
• If kept in clean surroundings, pigs are not inherently unhygenic - they are relatively clean animals... However, a pig can catch a flu of a person and a chicken.  Many new types of flu are recombined in pigs when they catch a bird influenza virus and a human influenza virus at the same time.
• Muslims are forbidden to touch pigs, or eat pork.  So are jews.
• Pork is considered by many to be the least healthy meat of all - for various reasons including the high contribution to blood acidity levels as a byproduct of eating the meat.
• In Britain, pigs are slaughtered by applying electric tongs to both sides of the head (which shocks them but doesn't kill them).  Then they are strung up by a leg and have their jugular cut open, to let the blood drain out the body and they lose consciousness.  Supposedly, if done correctly, this allows them to lose blood before they recover from the shock.
