The Capital of SMOG

Text written in: English

...but santiago is more than that. we packed our two days here with a lot of touristic activity.

after the 13hour busride from puerto montt (which we liked more and more in the end...) we arrived in the early morning, the sun was shining and we could take off our hightech clothes again!

the first day we spent with a little walk up the hill to the "virgen". from there we had a fantastic view of the huge smogcloud covering santiago entirely. i never saw anything like it. there, on the hill, we tried "Mota", a typical drink of chile with apricots and grains, strange but very nice.

after our way down with a kind of cable car, we were looking for the house of pablo neruda and found it! we had a very nice guided tour through this fantastic house called like the nickname of his third wife "la chascona" and learnt a lot about this charming guy.

on our walk to the city we visited the beautiful university and finally ended up at the plaza de armas, which remined me a bit to arequipa (although arequipa is nicer). our day ended with a homecooked feast of readymade pasta at our hostel ("bellavista", the best hostel in south america, they say). we almost destroyed our meal because we mixed up koriander and persil at the supermarket. the UGLY smell of koriander in the kitchen made us suspicious and we realized our mistake in the very last second. the big adventures of everyday life...

today we went to two museums and the mercado central (this was not good, just for tourists!) but the highlight was our visit of a cineastic video store. the owner of this amazing idealistic shop talked to us for almost an hour and showed us the basement with all his old movies (yes, erotic ones also!), very spooky and fun as well.

tomorrow we leave santiago and cross the andes another time! mendoza, we are coming! pictures will follow.
