A thoroughly miserable start to the new year - we'd just got back from the shower as the rain started and, anticipating a short shower (this is southern Australia in midsummer, remember) had jumped in the car for temporary shelter (the tent was barely big enough to sit up in). Within minutes it's obvious that this is more than just a light shower, so I clambered over the seats into the boot to get bread and spreads for breakfast.
After eating, we started playing cards to pass the time, but the rain showed no signs of abating, as the digital clock ticked away the hours. We were supposed to check out of the campsite at 10am, but the rain was still going strong and neither of us fancied getting out of the car to take the tent down, which was soaked through in any case. At about 1pm there's a knock on the window and I thought, "Here we go..." but it turned out to be a very generous Aussie guy named Michael, who'd seen us huddled miserably in the car, and invited us over to his family's tent for a nice cuppa and a biscuit.
Aussies on camping holidays seem to take half their worldly goods with them, starting with huge caravans - or in this case, a trailer tent with a big awning. For which we were truly grateful, despite what we'd said about it before (or since). In the end it rained continuously for about 7 hours solid, which left no time to go anywhere else today, so we bit the bullet, paid another night's camp fee, and went out to the cinema that evening (finally caught up with Harry Potter 4!)
