So basically we spent a day in transit on our way to cat ba island and that day was interesting. We spent a sort of stressful morning trying to get on a train, which was the subject of the previous journal, but once at the town of Hai phong things only got more interesting. Basically, we got off the train and were greeted by stares, literally hundreds of them. Some of wonder, some of awe, some of a good natured curiosity, and some which looked mean. Also shouts, and hellos as well, which were not helpful as we attempted to find out where to buy ferry tickets.
Eventually, by going to the port we were able to find some tickets for the next morning, and we were happily on our way. But not soon after a group of vietnamese guys who were kicking around a soccer ball shouted at us to join, which we happily did. We kicked the ball around a group of 5 for a while and as soon as the 6th joined us, we started to play. Now these guys were not as good as the kids from Buenos aires so noah and I actually looked pretty good in comparison, plus it was only three on three so we had plenty of opportunities to prove ourselves. Needless to say we looked good, but what was really funny about the whole thing was that as we played more and more people showed up just to watch, and some to try and get in the game. After about 30 minutes, we ended the game and went our mery way.
Having had a hard bus ride and good game of soccer, noah and I felt we deserved a little down time so we had thai style massages which were strange partly because the rooms in which the massage took place seemed more like a brothel room than a massage room and partly because the masseuse was watching vietnamese music videos the whole time, but the massage was good.
After that, feeling even better about ourselves, we decided to head out, we followed a spotlight (literally) tothe only spot in town that was still open, and were ushured into a booming club with flashing lights and the techno remix of the happy birthday song (no joke). The club was replete with go-go dancers and vip sections(6 of them), the only weird thing was that the happy birthday song was playing and one of the go-go dancers was a man with a bare midriff. we decided to stay anyway (at least for a few beers) because being places where you cant understand anything that is happening is interesting. after a few short minutes a vietnamese couple were over at our table saying: "dance, Dance" and encouraging us to finish our beers. So we gulped them down and joined them on the dance floor. Only it wasnt them, it was just him and he was really enjoying dancing with us. AFter a few minutes of this noah walked away, and I felt a little weirded out by the whole situation so i boogeyed off the floor after him. Not soon after the same couple was back at our table encoraging us to chug our beers and get back on the floor, but this time we tried to convince the chica to come with us, she wouldnt budge, but just to not be rude we danced for a few minutes and then skitadatled... weird day.
