Yep it is true, took about 3 weeks, but I am finally well and stomach bug/ head cold free.
To celebrate I had a complete dive of a weekend. There was some "Students Day" celebration on thursday and friday so I didn't have to teach. I left thursday morning and went down to Cape Comorin to spend the weekend. Cape Comorin is the most southernly place in India, right on the tip, and supposedly has a lot of spiritual significance among Hindus' but other then that there really is not alot. I do admit it was quite a beautiful and schenic area but looks can only get you so far, there was a Gandi memorial which took about 15 minutes to look at, a museum which really wasn't even that great, and a couple other small touristy things which really didn't amount to a whole lot. There was a temple which would have been interesting but it was surrounded by a massive brick wall and since I am not Hindu I could neither see nor enter the building.
Beaten and attempting to salvage what was left of my weekend I went north to Kovolum Beach. The Lonely Planet describes Kovolum as a " Once beautiful fishing village turned over-developed tourist spot". The first time I visited the beach I thought this was a bit harsh but after staying there a couple of nights I now hold true with what LP has to say. I spent two days there and felt frazzled when I left. You can literally not walk across the beach with out being bothered by at least a dozen shop owners. And even if you choose not to walk at all, and sit in a reastraunt or on the beach, you can rest assured that many a hassler will come by offering you mountains of rubbish. Ciggerette's, towels, lungis, t-shirts, postcards, sunglasses, hashish, mats, carpets, pineapples, it is all available right at your hotel door.
Oh well I suppose you can't win em all.
