Settling In

Hey,

Not a whole lot to report right now but it is good to hear from home and know
that virginia is getting along. There are exams at my school right now and
after that is the big Onum festival so I don't begin teaching until the 19th.
For now I have been exploring around the area with a guy named sean who is
studying to become a priest, he is from the U.S. and his english is fluent so
it has been good to have someone to communicate with. Kerelan people are
extremely educated and almost everyone knows english but they so rarely get
to practice it that at times it is impossible to understand. Some people on
site have excellent vocab and accent, the majority however have very limited
use and when I speak to them IT---- HAS---- TO--- BE--- VERY----SLOOOWW---
ANND--- CLEAR. I am playing a lot of guitar and reading so I am keeping busy
and just yesturday about 40 of the Indian college students living in my
hostle piled into my room to meet me and aks questions about Canada. As a
result I am now enlisted in the daily soccer game (in which I am on par,
Indians are about equal to Canadians in soccer) and spent the previous night
playing cards late into the evening. Nothing else to report right now I am
curently at a cyber cafe in a larger town about 45 mins from my school where
me and Sean have been shopping for the day, i bought a traditional Indian
Kutra and Moonda(500 rupees, roughtly 15 dollars) which are a special shirt
and dress thing for men, so now if I wish enter a temple I have better odds
of being aloud inside. Sean is leaving the school this friday so after that I
am on my own and will have to travel solo. I plan to visit other members of
Gap on my weekends off and explore the nearby cities, but for now I am
absorbing as much I can of the Onum festival which will last roughly 4 days.
