A day to explore Penang

Text written in: English

Up early this morning, and met with Tua ee and Gee Koo to explore the island.  Last time I was here I had a cheap camera, and was disappointed that I couldn't take some nice butterfly shots in the butterfly farm, so we headed up there first today.  First stop was at a Batik factory, where they produce some wonderful designs on cloth using wax and dyes.  From here we travelled to the butterfly farm (which also had scorpions, lizards, fish, ducks and many other insects), and I was able to get a few good shots.

We headed back to George Town after this, and visited the Kek Lok Si temple, overlooking the city.  Another very richly decorated temple.  By this time, the heat and humidity was really starting to get to us, so we had to slow down.  Not to mention the hundreds of steps there seemed to be.  We also went up to the Goddess of Mercy statue that is a fair recent addition to the Penang skyline.  A very large bronze statue, and very impressive.

After walking around the temple, we headed down for some more excellent Penang food for lunch, and then wandered around the Botanic gardens.  There are hundreds of monkeys here, all of them are wild.  They didn't seem to be as aggressive as they were when I was last here, but maybe the heat was getting to them as well.

Dinner tonight was at an open-air restaurant on the beach, with some excellent seafood.  We didn't particularly want to pick our fish or crab to be killed and cooked from the tank, so we settled for another banquet.  Apparently, the Governor of Penang (or something like that) plus his entourage passed our table at one stage on their way towards the back of the restaurant.

Late night coffee afterwards at a revolving restaurant at the top of one of the many hotels in George Town, and then I was shown a small street named after my great-grandfather, who apparently owned a lot of the houses on it.  Pity my camera battery had run out....
