In Buenos Aires, CMS missionaries Michael and Elspeth Collie introduced to a number of their friends and collegeagues, including a young guy called Walter.
Walter is from a slum area of BA, the first in his family to complete secondary school and before becoming a Christian, his uncle was trying to teach him a trade - break and enter.
Walter is now a committed Christian, teaching Sunday School and doing work experience with Certeza, the Christian publishing company that Michael and Elspeth work for.
Walter also loves football - a mad Boca fan he plays twice on weekends, once with some Christian university students and once with a group of guys from the slum area where he lives. Unfortunately the game with the uni students was called off because it was the same day as the Boca v River game (the biggest game of the year in Argentina), so Andrew's best option to play football was on a field on the edge of a very rough part of BA.
Andrew was pretty excited to be playing his first game of football in South America. After paying his 2 peso entry fee (which enabled the winning team to buy post game drinks), he was introduced to the team and quickly nick-named "rubio" which means blonde.
It was a fun game to watch, everything from talented young guys like Walter, to old blokes with great touch, to guys who didn't do much except run and down the field screaming madly. There were even a couple of horses that intermittently wandered on and off the field and one occassion decided to lie down in front of where a player was taking a corner. To further add to the variety of the play the centre third was a very dusty and very hard dirt patch whilst the grass on the wings was knee high.
Andrew's team won 8-4 and he was pretty excited when after Church the next day Walter asked Lucy Collie to translate that the guys had really enjoyed playing with him. It's funny how easy it is to get involved in a local game once you work out what "Rubio media!!" means and that they're pointing out the tall guy for you to mark at corners.
