What we learned yesterday about Alcatraz is that it is sold out until next week. But, we could arrive at the ticket console at 9:00 and get standby tickets. Since we've been getting to bed so early, getting up early isn't difficult at all! One stop at Cafe Trieste and we're back at Pier 39 (or 41 techinically).
We get our standby tickets and then stand in the standby line. There's probably 100 people in front of us, and Ethni is freezing. This is where the 'tude comes in. She's buys this GORGEOUS black, over-sized Alacatraz hooded sweatshirt. hee hee. When she puts it on, you'd better watch out. She's hardcore now! :)
Anyway, although we wait in line for 2 1/2 hours, things work out perfectly. Ethni held our place in line while I got us some clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. We ate that, and I talked with a man in line from Mexico. By the time we got on the ferry to the island, things had warmed up, the sky had cleared, and it became a beautiful day. If we had gotten to the island earlier, it would have been foggy, and we couldn't have seen these great views. I'm telling you. I have good vacation luck.
So, then we took a walk up to Lombard Street. I loved it there. Very touristy, but very worth it.
I got mixed up by thinking that H&M (my addiction) was on Polk Ave instead of Post. We walked at least 10-12 blocks out of the way up hill. Somehow, I injured my foot and have gained a fetching limp. Whatever, we still find our way to H&M and get some shopping done and have a dinner in Chinatown.
We get back to the hostel and decide it's SERIOUSLY time to join the party. Of course, they're not having one tonight. The loft downstairs is closed and the rooftop terrace is dead. We sit for one drink and go to bed. Ironic, huh? They still found a way to make just enough noise to be annoying, but we don't care.... Tomorrow, Sonoma Valley!!!
