~sniff~
I've stayed long enough to miss the hell out of this place. especially
diana and fatima. we've been 3 giggling girls bumbling our way through
spanish and english, eating empinadas, cheap sandwhiches and chocolate
cake. I'd tell you all that we were laughing about but I think it gets
lost in translation (like the story diana was telling about the parrot
that broke its tail but, "how do you say in english" she asks motioning
to her rear. I say "poop?" and so the story becomes about the parrot
that broke its poop. see...I think you had to be there).
After 2 days in the sacred valley seeing more amazing amazing ruins, I
got back to cusco haloween night. the last 2 days were truly on my own
- getting hostels, touring the sites, catching local buses. silly that
it's taken this long for me to really dive into it all, but I did and
it felt great!
I headed to the plaza to see the haloween action. they had made these
crazy bamboo firework contraptions - peeps built the rickety frames 2
stories tall, with spinny and twirly things that light up with
fireworks. sometimes they'd brake off and spin into the crowd -
yesssss! kids were also running around in costumes yelling "haloween!"
(not "trick-or-treat"). the fireworks were part of a religious holiday,
the kids were there for haloween. everyone was co-mingling in the plaza.
later I headed to mythology (disco) to meet a few folks. in cusco, the
clubs rotate between a mix of pop, awful old USA music, hip hop, and
trance. it's good because if you don't like whats on, just wait.
there was good energy out that night (haloween!) so suddenly it was
4:30 and the sky was getting lighter.....the club was still going, but
dawn was my sign to split. the next night I went out with fatima. she
also loves trance so it was easy to find energy to dance until 4:30
again! believing in the power of 3, we go out one last night but by
now, its the same music and I really to need to sleep...so we quit
around 2. the good news is there's no cover and I haven't really been
drinking so these are fun and cheap nights! I also meet a few more
folks from lima that I need to say hello to.
oh yeah, so now I say goodbye to cusco and I DID decide to go back to
lima. I'll see friends from usa who live there plus hang with a few
locals. time to see how this city really compares to opinions:
tourists (hate it) or locals (love it).
PS - a few weeks ago there was a bus from lima to cusco that got robbed
by armed gunmen. well, I met the only tourista on the bus - an awesome
gal Sarah, from ireland! she got her camera, some money, a jacket and
her boots stolen. as if thats not bad enough, she was mugged
(unsuccesfully) a week later in cusco. I have so much respect for her
strength to keep traveling!!!
