never plan ahead

what did I say I was doing next? well I didnt do it. I was staying with a friend I met on couchsurfers.com (great site if you havent been), joze, in salvador suburbs but decided to stay downtown for a few nights to meet up with franzi (swiss) who I met in florianopolis.

when I got to the hostel, learned franzi was leaving for the south - whoops, missed her. then I bumped into 4 peeps I met on the bus from rio. monique (atlanta), bret (ausie), huey and tomas (irish) were  headed to morro de sao paulo...like NOW. split second decision, do I stay?, do I go?.... my bags were already packed (I just got to the hostel) and I really wanted to get to this beach. plus wasnt truly feeling the salvador vibe (city was semi traquil post-carnival) this was a no brainer. I crashed their party.

so that kicked off 3 days of beach relaxation, snorkeling, eating promoçaos, ok, maybe a little drinking and a whole lot of sleeping in. funny, theres never a lot to report when you go to a beach....just a whole lot of excelent nuthin.

a cool thing - M de SP has no cars, only sandy streets. and taxis are wheel-barrows. you get hounded by the (do you call them) taxi drivers as soon as you get off the boat. plus theres a steep hill just to work you harder and maybe say yes afterall. but even though Im getting soft and out of shape (skiing is going to kill me!), theres no way Id say yes to this. plus the taxis arent metered (cant meter a wheel barrow) and everyone knows you dont use unmetered cabs, even IF its a wheel barrow...

after 3 days of lazing and eating, I hop the catamaran back to salvador. the waves were massive (10-20ft) and we plowed through wicked fast. the trip turned into a poor mans amusement ride - Id pop out of my seat from the bigger waves.

you could tell who was destined to puke by the sweat they broke out in...or their running to the back to hurl over the edge. funny, it was mostly guys and one older lady. I cranked beastie boys on my ipod - the 5 burroughs saved me. if we had 1 more hour to go I dont think Id have made it. every time I saw a head lurch forward, I looked the other way - to see puke would only mean game over for me. every seat had a platic bag tied to it - a LOT got used. the peeps who work on this boat have one of the crummiest jobs in the world. I should nominate them for that TV show. they ran to every puker with more bags and TP and to make sure nothing worse happened. bleh.

NEVER ever had a boat ride like that. since I didnt hurl, I can say it was a great time. now Im back in salvador to finally buy gifts - Im going shopping!!! and 2 of jozes english students are teaching me to cook brazilian food before I take off.
