after all that cold rain and wet of futa, today is heaven to crash on the beach in the hot sun. yesterday I passed through esquel to say hello to dario and laura again (but its "hasta luego" for sure. I'm coming back here in winter). but I left quick to keep heading south towards el calafate, the glaciers, and fitz roy. this'll be my southern-most point in south america. I'll be joining about 10,000 argentinian backpackers so I'm bracing for a zoo (and sleeping in alleys since I don't have a tent yet & the hostels will all be full). but from what I hear, I just gotta go!
so that means a 3 day investment to get from esquel to el calafate with a day-long delay in comodoro rivadavia. a town that the travel books say only worthy of "just a stop over". true, but coming from the cold semi-rain forest, I'm happy to be hot, dry and sea-wind blown! plus the beach is full of a pier 1 zen rock display - all round and perfectly smooth. with nothing but time on my hands, I picked THE most perfect rocks from the entire beach. Im sure of it.
so wish me luck - I have another all-night bus ride, then the hostel-search-from-hell tomorrow. but the scenery will be spectacular!
ps - learned a great new word from my latest book: monologist. this is a person you meet who only talks about themselves. they never ask you a question, they love to describe what THEY'VE been up to, if you get to talk, they interrupt to keep talking about themselves. there's a fairly large number of folks like this traveling. for the record, I don't like these types....but Í'm happy to have a word for them now.
pps - I'm in what feels like a final count-down on south america - less than 2 months left - yikes!
