arriving in salta was a trip - didn't even realize it, but I haven't really seen trees since huaraz, peru. yeah, there are trees that grow in towns, but the hillsides everywhere the past few weeks have been only shrubs, rocks, and dirt. so salta is this strange oasis of trees, green, rain and clouds.
I stayed at my first international youth hostel. it's a 4 story building with a bunch of big rooms with bunk beds. our first night this couple checked in about 4am and she got horridly sick in the bathroom but I slept through the whole thing (I'm sleeping so much better now!).
3 nights ago the hostel had a barbeque - so much red meat! It was heaven for us carnivores, especially after practically a veggy diet on the salar. I ate for 1.5 hours. reminded me of eating after a long run, except there was no long run. I gotta do something about this laziness!
after dinner, we headed to a club on the edge of town - basically a bunch of tents with different music in each one. of course we found the deepest, darkest trance and danced until dawn. we caught a ride back with 2 locals. they wished I had a blonde sister :). Hanibal fell asleep while we waited at a stop light. everyone was so wiped out.
Elia headed back to italy yesterday - another good bye :( we had some well timed conversations about art and creativity that I will seriously miss. I've met a few other people in salta also at the end of their trips. everyone talks about how to capture the essence of travel and bring it back home. I'm glad I don't have to think about this yet.
to pay for the partying of the past 2 nights, today I hiked 1000 steps to this overlook above the city. felt so good to break a sweat. I also discovered heaven on earth - a sandwich called a lomito that has steak, ham, egg, cheece, sauce, lettuce, tomato on fabulous bread. I could feel my arteries shrieking but boy did it taste divine.
tonight I head to mendoza, argentina, gateway to aconcagua. I'll finally be in patagonia!
