The Goldmines

The Goldfields area of  Kalgoorlie,where gold was discovered here by three Irish gold prospectors in the 1800's with its grand architecture of pubs, hotels and town halls lets you imagine what its must have been like during the gold rush period . While the main town of Kalgoorlie is a lively, buzzing town, there is a rough and ready sensibilities of the locals -hard drinking, gambling, ladies of the night - and bar staff who look like they should be - are very much the order of the day.  All the bars have skimpies- (a skimpie being a young girl -usually about 18-25 wearing just her underwear and serving drinks behind the bar). Her night is usually spent working behind the bar with guys drooling over their beers at her while at the end of the night she has to put on a show revealing all!

We took a tour of the local brothel - Lantrees, and the mines which were both interesting! and hitched out to the town of Boulder to the Superpit where we got to see where they do a blast each day. This goldfield has produced over 1000 tonnes of precious metal, and is recognized as the richest square mile on earth. Access to the area is prohibited with security at each side. From the lookout we got chatting to a guy who worked down in the mines and he took us on a drive up to the enterance and around where they have all the trucks and machinery. Unfortunetly we couldn't go any further!
