Today we took the ferry from Bluff (near Invercargill) to Stewart Island. This is an hour's journey south of the south island. Maori legend has it that this is the anchor for the rest of New Zealand (or something like that). The island is only 65km by 45km and over 80% is uninhabited national park territory - home to over 20,000 Stewart Island kiwis. Unlike most kiwis the Stewart Island kiwi comes out during the day due to the dense forest blocking out the light. We did a nice walk and looked for some kiwis - we heard rustles in the ferns twice, but they turned out to be Wekas - another flightless bird but with a standard beak! So no kiwis for today! The forest was alive with bird song and I took a movie of it on my digicam. We went to a nice cafe for seafood chowder then off for some more walking - then it chucked it down with rain.
A nice day all in all!
