Caught the train 2nd class to Lopburi which means you get a mela and reclining seats!Lopburi is also a former capital of thailand, but has little to offer visitors. We came for one thing only- the monkeys!! God Knows why, but the place is overrun by the creatures. We visited the Khmer style ruins in the centre which swarms with them- it's a sight to behold! The first monkeys were saw were tearing telephone wires down in the street! I was worried they might attack us, but we were given a cane to ward them off. They were amazing animals to get up close to, so human-like and hilarious in their actions. We witnessed them doing all manner of things to each other! You could go inside the central ruins with the monkeys caged outside, like a reverse zoo! They were peaking in at us and tried to steal our bamboo cane. Suddenly something across the road attracted them, they called out to each other and hundreds of them started stampeding across the road, stopping the traffic! Everywhere you looked there were monkeys on cars, roofs, wires, walls! Really incredible. I doubt you would ever get so close to monkeys in the wild as you can in Lopburi, we really enjoyed it. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the historical surroundings, but the heat was unbearable so we took refuge in an air-con cafe for iced fruit juice!
