I caught an overnight bus back to Bangkok which was sposed to arrive at 6am but it arrived at 4am (the first time EVER anything has been early in Asia, usually it's Thai Time all the way), where they dumped our bags in the middle of the street so cars and busses had to swerve round us. I can't sleep sitting up so I was still awake enough to know where I was in Bangkok. Taking the bus in takes about 2 hours from the edge of the city to the centre, it's massive. Anyway, met another Norwegian girl Tonye on the bus and she had a place to find to stay so we went there and they were full. This was the case with every place in the vicinity - we tried at least 30 places. No kidding. So we sat and had a drink waiting for some people to check out. I was getting really tired and feeling sick by then. No beds anywhere. And checkout here is midday. Then we wandered off and a tuk-tuk driver told us of rooms about 5 blocks away so we went there. We're paying heaps for what it is (Hotel Old Crappy) but it's clean and has a (green) TV and bathroom but no hot water as something to do with petrol rations? So we slept for 5 hours and then went to Chatuchak weekend markets. On the way there we went to the Gem Factory so the driver could get his free petrol voucher for taking us there. It's the biggest in the world apparently and you get a drink on the way in, then you see the people making jewellery, and then you enter the showroom and you seriously need sunglasses in there - I could not believe all the sparkles! And it was cheap too. Silver ring with a good quality stone was about $45 NZ. But I'm not really into the fancy pants sparkly things - more the different funky stuff. Tonye bought something for her boyfriend though. Was totally bling! haaha. Then we went to the Chatuchak weekend markets. I wandered round for hours totally overwhelmed by everything. It's the most massive market you'll EVER see in your life. And when you know where you are, it's not going to last long. I was lost the whole day. I bought some Xmas presents and the most ridiculous wooly hat ever for London. After that we were exhausted so we went home and then out for dinner where I ran into the people I was with in Hoi An, Vietnam, and lovely Melinda and Jason from the USA which was wierd as they were talking about when we all met when we ran into eachother. Also saw the yelling Italian man at 4am when we arrived, drinking on the street with randoms. Must've been cast out of the Ko Pha Ngan crew he was with after the yelling match! Everyone's here to get their flights home or away for Xmas so it's cool - like a reunion at the end.
Today I'm going to the Pakred Babies Home (thanks Shelley!) but can't get photos as I've lost my bloody charger, and more looking around but that's all I have left to do really. I will meet Tonye for dinner - she's meeting her boyfriend at the airport in the morning - he's come over to spend Xmas and NYR with her before going home again. Then I leave at 11.50pm to go to London. I'm looking forward to a place with a bit of fire in the belly (so laxed out here it's almost backwards) and good friends at last, oh and music!! CAN'T WAIIIIIT for the music! I've missed it. 6 weeks seem to have gone pretty slow but in a nice way. I feel ready to leave, though I love being in Bangkok, such a wicked city, plus it's sunny! I saw a xmas tree before which was exciting as you wouldn't know it's xmas if you're in Asia.
Better go eat my second to last asian brekkie!
PS I added heaps more photos to the last Cambodia entry
