Samos

Text written in: English

From the night before, most of us had decided to take the on-the-spot opportunity that Athena had some how woven for us...a private bus tour around the island - I have no idea how she weaves this magic! The start was early but worked to our advantage as we could see all the attractions before the mad tourist rush. Stopping points were the Paleological Museum in Mytilinii (Annabel's favourite stop!!!!), the Monastery of the Virgin of Grotto (which was in action and was great), the Ireon (famous Sanctuary of Hera) and the 'Valley of the Nightingales'. Along the way, we cruised past many small villages and awesome scenic areas. This was the largest island of our trip and so proved to be a long tour. We definitely recommend a bus tour as a way to see the place. It does also help to have Annabel - the group game enthusiast - onboard for entertainment.

By the end of it we all couldn't wait to get back for some sunning action and a brief walk around the town. Note to future travellers...all the islands have different store operating hours. For instance on Samos in particular, they shut early on Sat, close on Sun, shut early on Mon and have late night shopping on Tue/Thu/Fri, but don't quote me on this, as I'm sure they're likely to change!
