There is a very nice (and expensive, for Egypt) restaurant in Zamalek
called Sequoia. Today my friend Nancy invited me to join her and some
of our friends there for Iftar, so I happily went. We were supposed to
wear black and orange in honor of the special Halloween occasion. As
always, I appreciated the formalities of festivity and did my part.
Boy, my academic
work sure has been taking a back seat to all the fun-having lately, but
then again, I am in Egypt. And it is Halloween, and Ramadan, and the 'Eid holidy in a few days. Midterms may be interesting, but they're not that interesting. :)
My Egyptian friend Mark said I speak with a natural Shaami (Levantine)
accent in Arabic and that my pronounciation is very good. So I felt
quite good about myself, especially since coming here has made me
realize just how far I have to go with regards to learning Arabic and it is easy to get discouraged sometimes.
On a completely unrelated note, I'm learning a cane dance in bellydancing class. Awesome.
Tomorrow I'm going to Sharm el-Sheikh with my friend Emily, who is
flying in from Germany to come visit me over the 'Eid holiday (which
coincidentally corresponds exactly with her break from school this
year).
Life is beautiful. And busy. And crazy. I love being alive.
