Our Bangkok doctor told us that if you get sick in Myanmar, you get the f@#k out of there as soon as possible for the medical system is no good. It was therefore with some worries that I found myself aching in bed with a 39.5 C/103F temperature. We called the hospital and got picked up in the ambulance a.k.a. a regular car. The doctor took us in quite quickly and spent maybe 5 minutes examining me after which I was left to my own agony on the examining bench. In the meanwhile the doctor spent the best of 1 1/2 hours talking to Brent. He was mostly interested in discussing the US and how many years he had spent in medical school (about 4, I think), but Brent was persistent in asking about a diagnosis, and some possible treatments . The doctor showed his experience in asking Brent what he thought! And it was upon Brent's request that a blood sample was taken to determine the possibility of malaria or dengue. Finally, Brent was given the option of medications that we could take home with us. We ended up with some antimarial, a dose of antibiotics, and some fever reducers. Yahh, our faith in the Myanmar medical system is low, but at least we know that Brent can make it as an MD if the teaching fails :-)
