August 6th arrived and once again I managed to knock a vase of fake flowers into Cyn's porridge.
Steve actually had to go into work for a bit so Cyn and I wandered
around Edinburgh and stopped into many different touristy shops.
After looking around for a bit we headed back to the Pleasance, was
accosted by people giving out Mikey the Pikey fliers for a second time
and met Steve. From there we headed to...bum bum bum....the
Dynamic Earth!
On the way to the museum Steve pointed out the Scottish
Parliment. It looks like an architect ran amok with all his
leftover pieces from another project. That or the building
resembles something you might see in a sci-fi movie. Ah
well...perhaps it makes people feel like they don't actually have to
deal with politics when they go into work?
So we went into the Dynamic Earth exhibit. The architecture was
really interesting. The exhibits were well set up and the
whole experience was enjoyable. They set it up as though you were
time travelling and exploring the evolution of the Earth and all its
inhabitants as time moved forward. It was fun and interactive
although the finale was a bit anticlimactic. Rain...as though you
don't see THAT in Scotland. Ooh! One section was about the
poles and when you walked in the room was colder than the previous
ones. They had a very large chunk of ice in the middle of the
room that no one believed was real until touching it. Anyway it
was fun.
After leaving the museum we found out that it had rained (slightly
ironic, ne?) and so we headed back up to the Royal Mile. As we
were walking up it started to drizzle so we stepped into a fudge
shop. As it turned out, many other people had the same
idea. We watched some fudge being made and then bought some
ourselves. From there we kept ducking into shops up the Mile
until the rain abated. Of course one place we stopped was the
Museum of Children. Meh. It could have been better but at
least it was dry. Basically it had a lot of old and new toys
behind glass. Some stuff was supposed to do something when you
put in money buuuuut they didn't work. Ah well!
After the Museum of Children, we walked further up the Royal Mile and
then watched a very entertaining street performer from New
Zealand. We stopped into a swords shop where we tried on armor
and the shop employees made me demonstrate how to use nunchakus.
Fun!! We went a little further up the Mile before needing to
turn around as they were lining people up for the Tattoo. We
wandered back to George's Square to spend a little time sitting before going to see
Yin-Yang, a very
impressive performance that combined dance and martial arts (and
weapons, yay!). I enjoyed it a great deal, especially because I
can look at some of the stuff they were doing and say that they were
"okay" doing x, y, and z, but I've seen better. I think the guys
trained first as performers or dancers and then as martial
artists. Still they did a lot that I couldn't do. Very
impressive indeed.
Then? Dinner! Stacey tries sushi for the first time!
And to her (and everyone else's) surprise they put wasabi in the
sushi. :) No worries though, I won't let that stop me from
trying it again! It was a full day but heaps of fun! After
that? Steve taxied us back to the B&B and we fell asleep
easily after all that walking.
