Americans

Text written in: English

It would have been nice to see Florence but there were too many Americans in the way. A good friend once told me that Florence was a poor mans Sienna, i'm beginning to see what he meant. We were taken to a lovely villa in the hills outside the town by some family friends of Jimmy's and were cooked a feast of Italian food. The couple, Gianni and Jackie, were Italian and English respectively, had moved over to Italy about 25 years ago. Jackie grew everything she cooked and after our biggest day yet {almost 140km} it was very well received.

The day began in a place called Castelnuovo, still high in the mountains. We stayed in a hillybilly campsite high above the town and when we got there, bought all the ladies homemade puddings. This upset her for some reason, presumably because she had to make some more - this in turn upset Charlie, as if it wasn't bad business to put a campsite on top of a mountain, with no sign posts, getting grumpy about selling stuff you make to sell will see her bankrupt in no time - we hoped anyway.

I wish we had more time to see Lucca. Unfortunately, having to stop there to fix a punctured wheel {three times in a row} was not the ideal way to see a town. Jimmy is having a torid time with Veronica. He had to completely replace his brake pads this morning having been riding against them all the way through the mountains. Today was no better - the back wheel was all over the place and has driven the poor boy to distraction. This is what ladies can do to you.

Reaching Florence became an obsession today, dare i say it, we may have overstretched ourselves.
