Nadi

After the cooler and wetter climate of New Zealand, it was nice to step off the plane in Fiji to be greeted by blue skies, sunshine, warmth and humidity.  As I knew I was on the final stretch of my trip, I was going to take full advantage of being a beach bum.

We met up in Nadi with Alex, Katie and Ted whom we had been travelling with in New Zealand so it was good to see some friendly faces.  We moved into the Nadi Bay Hotel and it was good to see Katie again where we quickly reunited in the bar for more booze and frolics. 

Nadi itself was not very nice.  I had been advised by Cobbler to get out of Nadi and onto the islands as soon as possible, I could see why.  The town itself was very dirty, dusty and a bit dodgy.  Not sure if it was down to me looking a bit wide but every Fijian I passed offered me all sorts of  drugs etc and these guys were not the sort to mess with, they were all unbelievably huge. 

The only thing i ended up accepting and buying was the Kava which is the traditioanl Fijian drink. It tastes fowl and makes your mouth feel very numb.  Apparently it has calming efects and was once exported around the world as a herbal remedy to deal with panic attacks, depression and the like.  That was until some American scientist claimed it had adverse affects on your health and the Fijians lost out on their biggest export trade ever.  The Fijians seem so relaxed and laid back and do things according to Fijian time which could be anything from 5 minutes to a couple of hours.  The Kava cant be that bad eh??

After a couple of heavy nights out with the group, a dirty Indian-Fijian ruby, acclimatising to the new weather conditons and putting in some more mileage for my marathon training we decided to head off to Mana Island which had been a recommendation that Katie had recieved.
