Nanjing

This morning we awakened too early for our late night and packed our bags for the trip to Nanjing. Emma had purchased another bag to carry her gifts, I managed to fit most everything in my backpack since I have been steadily ridding myself of magazines and books. I also only had purchased small gifts and wore my tennis shoes to increase space. With my regular washing, I realize I brought too many pairs of underwear and socks - an I should have brought the additional short skirt I threw out at the last minute - it's darn hot here and a skirt is better than pants. We met with Victor at 8:30 and headed for the train station - the three hour ride became 4.5 somehow, and after securing taxis in the chaos outside the train station we made it to our hotel (yet another reminder as to why this would be difficult to do on one's own), took a brief break (I washed more clothes) and went for a large lunch. Nanjing is much more typical traditional Chinese than either Beijing or Shanghai - more traditional architecture and need I mention more souvenir shopping. This will be the last time I write for a few days (unless I sneak on for a bit tomorrow) - from here we head by train overnight tomorrow night to another town, then by bus to another town the following day to spend the night then the following morning we board the boat for the "cruise" (as we are affectionately calling it). We have three more overnight trains and the boat which are all supposed to be the "rougher" parts of the trip - I am excited to see what awaits. I planned for the worst and it's by far exceeded my expectations so far. I'll be interested to see what the rest of the tour brings. I am also excited becase the two Swiss guys are going to be in Bangkok during part of my time there, so we are planning to meet up together to see the city. In the evening we just walked around the town which has beautiful old architecture - but basically consists of more shopping - there's a load of that here. If I come back I'll bring an extra suitcase, just for the shopping. We had planned to go out - Nanjing is a large University town - but we were all tired from the late night the prior evening, so instead we drank beers in the room and chatted. The guys showed us all the things they had found shopping. Emma informed me she had seen a very large cockroach in our room during her afternoon nap - and when we went to retreive money for the trip to the store for beer, we saw many bugs in the bathroom...this is not our best accommodation. I should also mention that the mosquito has been introduced to our trip - the hotel is located on a nice river in town and the rooms come with a little mosquito machine - we used the mosquito wipes (thanks mom and dad) to lather up before bed - anything that would be sticking out from the covers.
