Fraser Island Tour

Text written in: English

The tour was awesome!!! Fraser Island is incredibly beautiful; it is a sand island where everyone travels around it in 4WD vehicles as there are no roads. The first day of the tour we went to Basin Lake. It was about a 30 - 40 minute hike into the rainforest. It was extremely hot, but when we got there it was worth it. The lake was a natural peat bottom fresh water lake. It was surrounded on all sides by the forest. Patrick & I didn't have our bathing suits on so we didn't go in for a swim. I was jealous of the people who had theirs on as the water looked great.

We hiked to lunch (which didn't consist of much!) and then went to our next destination.

Lake Mckenzie was the next destination. It is a much bigger lake than Basin Lake, but was formed in much the same way. The sand in the water is so fine you can use it to polish your jewelry and is a good exfoliant as well.

The lakes on this island remind me of the lakes in the Rocky Mountains. the only difference is no snow-capped mountains and it's much warmer.

That night we ate dinner with our tour, and that night we had a trivia night at the bar. We teamed up with a couple named George(ina) and Greg. We came second, we lost by 1 point. Missed out on a $50 bar tab. Boo!

The upside is we became fast friends with George & Greg - they're from Birmingham England.

Day 2 of the tour

We went to the 75 mile beach which acts as the main highway for the island. Patrick & I took a 20 minute scenic flight over the island. It was incredible and bumpy as the plane was a 7 seater.

Then we went to the Coloured Sands - rock formation along the beach that is various colours of browns and reds.

Then onto Indian Head. It was about a 20 minute hike up it and once you are there it is a great lookout over the ocean. We saw a couple mantarays and schools of fish. Apparently, you can also see shark from there.

Then to the Champagne pools. little pools formed by the ocean on the beach. They were smelly and not that impressive.

Back on the bus and back to the hostel... throught the Stevie Wonder bump. The roads are all sand so they are very bumpy - there's one bump that's called the Stevie Wonder bump because of the way the bus sways back and forth when it goes over the bump.

That night we had dinner and went to the bar. There was a karaoke competition. Our tour got up and sang I just Called to say I Love you in honour of the Stevie Wonder bump.

We also met another couple, Sarah & Stuart, from Windsor England that our on their way around the world.

Day 3

In the morning we hiked to a Lake Wabby a lake that is slowly being filled in by a large sandblow (dune). It loses 1 metre of sand every year; there's 50 metres of water left so in 50 years it will be gone. We then hiked the sandblow out to the ocean. It was only about a 45 - 60 minute hike in 30+ degrees weather - in the sand! It was extremely hard, but it was soooooo worth it.

That afternoon, we went to Eli Creek. A natural spring creek that starts somewhere high up on Fraser and comes out on the beach running into the ocean. The water felt like Ontario lake water in the early summer. It was pretty chilly, but extremely refreshing after the morning hike.

That night we returned back to Hervey Bay. Patrick & I had been promised an upgrade on our room that included a kitchen, a/c and a tv. So we invited the Brits back to our room. When we got back to check in, they had given us this tiny little cell. It had a cynder block wall and a double bed. That's it. I threw a small hissy fit and we were given our upgrade. It turned out that we shared the villa with one of the couples (Sarah & Stuart) that we had met on the trip.

George & Greg brought a crate of beer and we sat around and drank and chatted into the night.

It was fantastic!
