It was a long trip from Naples to here. It took almost all of 2 days. I left at 10 in the morning (a train that was supposed to arrive didn't exist) took that to connecting city. I meet a guy named Carlos from Columbia who was heading in the same direction so that made the trip tolerable. We waited for an hour then off to the clean, boring city of Bari. We got there at about 4 and the ferry took off at 8. I grabbed something at the port then went on board. The ferry was like a mini criuse ship and it was a free trip for me because of my rail pass. Although I did have a seat like on an airplane. The trip went from 20 - 12:30 (or 8 pm -12:30).
I had a good time on the ship but it shook alot making it very hard to sleep and I woke up (more like stood up) at 5 am and my eyes were all bloodshot (not from alcohol). I walked around as we were at port of Ingumentas then actually got some sleep until about 9:30. We then had to wait for a train We had a hamberger (Carlos' choice), bought some groceries, and waited for the next train. I got off at Cornith (the same one from the bible) left Carlos and waited again for a train to this town. It took a while but after we got mostly here we took a bus then turned the corner to this town.
Its very nice, there are 3 castles surrounding the city, all built by Venicians. There is a small one on a small island in the port, a destroyed one in the tip of the peninsula, and a large complex one on the highest precipice behind the town. I meet two more people one from Columbia and another from Peru on the bus and we went looking for a cheap hotel. After walking around town we finaly found one for 10 euro (a great price), then had a nice dinner of gyros (at 1.50 each, also very cheap), walked around town and returned to the hotel.
Today I woke late, climbed to the top of the highest fortress (Palamidi). There were 999 steps to the top of it, and spent 2 hours exploring this very fun castle. There were 3 ramparts so I had alot to do. I also climbed up one of the sides of the ramparts (not safe at all), it was so much fun. Unfortunately by that time all the tourists were taking the road and walking around too.
I then went to the beach (its rocky but warm) and took a swim in the warm water then walked around the point.
It seems that Greece has cheaper food and accomidiation generally but its harder to find internet, and especially cheap internet. It was about 1.5 an hour in Rome, and I found it is 4 here most places. I did find a gaming center (where all these kids are playing Counter-Strike) for 2.
The town it self is very charming, clean, lots of resurants with cheap food, lots of little stores and a great view. This may be my favorite town yet. Much different from bustling Rome or Florence. Althought from Naples every city we have passed though has seemed nice.
I still don't know what I am going to do the next 5 days I have here in Greece. I don't know if I have enought time to get up to Meteora (its a long train ride), but I will try. I don't plan on spending much time in Athens, as I have been told by everyone (including 4 guides) that Athens doesn't have much except the Parthenon and the Archeological Museum. My plane leaves from there on the 3rd at 19, so I will spend the day looking at the sites.
Time is running out. I wish I had more time to go around Greece and see more sights, but this must end sometime and its comming up soon.
