Day 2

Text written in: English

The only way to soften a 5am wake up call, is to serve hot coca tea while those being woken are still in their tents. Breakfast and meeting the porters, these guys carry upwards of 45kg in sacks strapped to their backs, while running past us along the trail. The porter record for the 42km trail is 3 hours 45 (we take 4 days). Day 2 is highlighted by Dead Womans Pass, 4200m above sea level, about a 1400 metre climb from camp one which takes about four hours, but is a little easier than I expected. A month at altitude in Bolivia proves helpful acclimatisation, as does many nights on the local beers in Cusco? After the pass we descend about 1.5 hours to camp 2, the continuing trail visible in the mountain side opposite, a fantastic view. As the sun sets the temperature drops and the clouds roll into the valley. Another super supper served, in bed by 8:30pm!!!

Setting off nice and early for the toughest climb of the trek. Climbing up "look mum, I'm hiking the Inca Trail" Looking up at the 4200m "Dead Womans Pass" Am I there yet? Step by step, we keep climbing Made it to the top, feels great, if not a little cold Looking back up at the pass. The name Dead Womans Pass, comes from the fact that that rock there looks something like a dead woman? Too much coca and mushroom tea i think. Looking at an actual postcard of Peru The norwegian viking Camp 2
