We arrived in Yichang at 10am from the prison train after passing through some nice scenery and a glimpse of rural china. We were met outside the station by a woman who was taking us to a cheap hotel, which at first glimpse was actually a building site...great. We paid for the cruise we are going on down the Yangtze and checked out our room, which turned out to be ok, although you could tell why it was a two star. But im not grumbling, it hasnt got cockroaches or spiders, so it is fine by me (not so much by alex as it only has a squat toilet).
After watching basketball on our huge TV for an hour or so, we headed out into town to see what Yichang had to offer us. Not much was the answer. It is a pretty grotty city, mainly due to the fact that half of it it undergoing some kind of construction...alex keeps whinging that they are building steel framed buildings and as a result driving up world steel prices...what a bean!!!
We decided to cut our losses and do a bit of shopping for the boat trip the next day, and we sorted ourselves out with copious amounts of cheap food. Funny thing about walking around a chinese supermarket is that you dont have a fuckign clue what anything is!! They have tanks full of disgusting looking fish and bits of meat that i have never seen before, but we all agreed that it was probably the best idea to steer clear of these! On our walk back to the hotel, we spotted a hair dressers, and after much umming and aahing, we decided to go in (alex is very protective over his hair as he is receding badly at the age of 21, haha, not that i can say anything, i am going grey! Happy days, we got a head massage, shampoo and condition and a pretty good haircut for 70p each. I am going to be asking Boothy why we have to pay a tenner at home.
After a couple of hours kip back at the hotel, we decided that it would be rude not to go out and find a bar for a drink. We went to a coffee house next door to the hotel where we asked for Carlsberg and got Bud (im not complaining). It was pretty cool as the chairs were like hanging baskets, so we relaxed for about 10 minutes before a cockroach started climbing up the wall next to us and we made a sharp exit. We walked further down the road looking for a bar with no success, but we did see a steak house...result! Not only did we find a steak house, but it cost me 1.50GBP for a fillet steak and three big bottles of beer (that woudl cost about 50 quid in the Red Lion).
