Ancient capitals and too many grasshoppers

Text written in: English

I left Ulan Bator at 10am with a butt plug and a healthy supply of Immodium in tow for the eminent shits i will get from eating too much Mongolian food!  I have a female guide called Alta and a really small driver called Omboo ( i think he might need pedal extensions.

We drove for about 4 hours on roads not too dissimilar to the one leading to the Saracens Head car park, complete wioth copious potholes before we stopped for lunch in grasshopperville!  I have never seen so many grasshoppers in my life.  Every step you take, about 5 of the bastards leap out of the way...weird.

After lunch, we visited some mini snad dunes at a place called Mongol Els and continued for a further 150 kilometres to the ancient Mongolian capital of Karakorum, where i got my first view of the impressive monastery Erdene Zuu.  It was getting pretty dark when we got there, so we justy whipped up a quick spag bol and hit the sack in our gers.  For anyone that isnt familiar with the term ger, it is a mongolian house, basically made out of wood and animal fur, so it can be easily packed away when they move from place to place (normally at least 4 times a year).  The gers were actually surprisingly luxurious compared to what i was expecting.... they even have proper beds!
