The entire peninsula is pretty wild and fairly sparsely populated. The area holds some of the most beautifull scenery we have seen and there are not many to share it with. The area also attracts many people who have given up on city life and many alternative living types. The town therefore are very cute and interesting to stroll through.
As we drove in to the town of Coromandel on the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, we stopped at a much deserved oyster and mussel shop, nearby they were farming both. These are officially the largest oysters that either of us have ever had, they were almost at chokable size.
As we drove out of Coromandel, we passed by the Waterworks garden. Wow, what a surprise, especially after almost walking through without paying but was quickly caught in the act. We walked into a garden of which we knew nothing about except that they had a large watermill at the entrance made up of pots, pans and gardening boots. We went through and had a great day riding flying foxes, large hampster rings, bicycles and seeing wonderful pieces of ingenious water operations. A great combo of physics and Eco frindly inventions. We felt like we were back 10 yeras old again.
As we arrivced on the East coast of the Coromandel peninsula we visited Opita Bay and went for a beautifull walk on the beach and up to a bluff where we saw two Orkas ( killer whales) out at sea, beautiful sight.
We visited the Broken Hills, an old gold mine from the early 1900's, and did a 3 hour walk past waterfalls and through the 500 meter Collins Drive Tunnel, an old gold mine tunnel full of green glow worms, which we initially thought were bats. gain we were spoiled with stunning scenery and fortunate enough to have it all to ourselves.
We drove passed the hot water beach, where you can have your own personal hot water spa on the beach due geothermal activity in the area. Unfortunately we the springs are only accessible at low tide and we got there at the wrong time, real bummer. We later drove past Mount Maunganui on our way to Ferg and Karla's house in Whakatane.
