It had to be done - a trip to Palm Beach north of Sydney, home of 'Home & Away'. It's actually a pretty low-key place - no Alf or Bec Cartwright roaming around - and a suprisingly wild and lovely beach with orangey-red sand. It's an extremely wealthy enclave as well as is apparent from the big expensive houses on the headland to the south of the beach. If you ever come here bring your own sandwiches too cos the nearest shop seems to be at Palm Beach Wharf, a fair walk away on the other side of the peninsula.
We did the obligatory lounging around on the beach and swimming before walking down the beach to the Summer Bay lifesavers club where we had a cuppa from the kiosk and joined the queue to take our photos. Then we climbed up to Barrenjoey lighthouse in time for sunset. It was well worth it cos it was a beautiful and romantic setting with lovely views over the Hawkesbury river, golden in the setting sun, to the forests of Brisbane Water national park on the other side. Not even a loud group of hefty middle-aged Americans could totally spoil it!
