Itacare (surfs up baby!!)

Text written in: English

After Nick and I left the Brazilian Hippie run hostel in Arrial D´Ajuda, which reminded the both of us of my crazy house back home in TO, we continued our adventures up the coast to try our luck surfing in Itacare. Even though we had parted ways with the two Aussie boys that we had met in Purto Suguro, on our first night in Itacare guess who we ran into. Of course they were their to surf as well, which turned out to be in our favour b/c we got some free aussie style surfing lessons. Let me tell you something though, although surfing looks like all fun and games, it is not as easy as it looks. And NO! it is nothing like snowboarding, b/c before you even try and get up on the board you need to be able to get out past where the waves break so you can actually ride the waves; and trying to get out past "the break" is one of the hardest things that I have ever done. Just imagine you were in a wheel chair and all you wanted to do was cross the street, but instead it felt like you had no hands to move the chair forward and there was someone throwing ten buckets of salt water in your face every ten seconds. I don’t know if that captures it for you, but lets just say it will be a while before we are big wave surfers. Nonetheless, when we set our egos aside, it was a lot of fun and the few times that we both were able to get up and ride some waves it was totally awesome. It wasn't until 12yrs ago that the town had a paved road running into and was totally isolated. However, now that there is one main road running in and out of the town, which is guarded by the "Policia Militar", it has become a hot spot b/c there are so many beautiful beaches. In fact the beaches in Itacare are probably some of the best beaches that we have ever seen. There are two "hidden" beaches that we had to hike through the forest 40mins to get to, but once you see the beach you realize that it well worth it. They say that everyone who goes to Itacare ends up staying much longer then they intended to, which is exactly what happened to us. We spent a week there and in that time we made friends with all the locals, put together a "gringo" soccer team and everyday on the beach we gave the Brazilians a run for their money.
