He Says:
We were spending 7 weeks n Italia and I knew that I would feel shameful if I missed attending a live soccer match. As games are only on Sunday and the occasional Saturday, coinciding a game with our travelling was tricky. There are 4 leagues here in Italy, A through D and we wanted to see an A game as this is the best level and would draw the biggest crowds. Teams like AC Milan, Juventus, AS Roma and Inter Milan all play in the A league and we had the good fortune of getting A Series tickets, here in Reggio. BRING IT ON!!!!
The opponents were Cagliari, a team from the island of Sardinia. Both teams were in the lower third of the A Series standings and in fact, Cagliari was in last place. I loved the constant jumping, singing, chanting and swearing even. It was so passionate, just as I expected. I wondered what the vibe from 80,000 screaming fans would be like for a National Game. There were only about 8,000 for this game but the passion and fire was there. Thankfully, the extensive security on hand was not required!!!

So in Reggio di Calabria I had the feeling of a mafia presence. Cant quite single out one thing that would lead me to this feeling, but this place just had the air about it. I wondered what type of transactions had taken place at the port we stayed right next too!!
The soccer game had that hard feel to it as well. There certainly was the passion in the stands that Laird was talking about, but MAN, on the field, these guys were going after each other like they had revenge to dish out! A very dirty game it was!! Also of interest during the game was watching one of the stores on the periphery of the stadium go up in flames. Never a dull moment here in Reggio!!
