Havin had very limited sleep, Shannon and I were a little slow in getting up, but were fed, clean and dress up on the tram to the melbourne cup by 11:30.
Having been a little worried about tickets etc. we discoverd that it was brilliantly organised at Flinders street station, and got to the track around 12:30.
With c. 120,000 people there, the atmosphere was electric and with weather perfect, champagne flowing we were completely set up for a fantastic day.
Having watched a couple of warm up races, we eventually got ourselves in the queue to make our bet on the race that stops a nation!
After a very educational chat with Diermiud, a lovely Irsih guy in the line up that gace us some sueflu race tips, I placed a bet on the hot favourite and two times champion, Makybe Diva, and then sturred with a little patriotism, a wager on the english horse, Distinction.
So at three o clock the atmosphere was building, we had got our tickets, champagne and cameras all at the ready!
The race was incredible with the whole crowd going mad! thankfully for me, and for the first time in my life I won! Makybe Diva came in first, which won me enough to cover that bet, and the Distinction bet, that came in...eigth! Plus a little extra for a lovely bottle of bubbly!
After the event, thousands fled to th streets of Melbourne, but with thousands still at the ground we hung around and soaked up the moment and the music for a while, before finally heading back to the hostel. With big intentions to go out and celebrate the day, the 11 hours driving the day before, and the exhausting dayt at the races caught up with us and we both crashed by 9:30!
