kathmandu is a real melting pot of indian an buddhist culture. and thamel the main backpacker area is almost as convenient as bangkoks kao san road. you can do lots of shopping here (what we did) and you get great food from all over the world at quite low prices.
the first day we did nothing and just relaxed. then we started the hard tour program (there are many sights in and around kathmandu and you need almost a week to see them all).
bouddhanath and swoyambhu
you can find tibetian stupas at these places. everything looks very tibetian and there are almost more monks here as in tibet.
pashupati nath
is the holiest site for hindus in nepal. it reminded us a bit of varanasi. there are many sadhus in this area and they even have cremation grounds where they burn the dead.
bhaktapur
is a city a bit outside of kathmandu with very nice squares and temples. when you're here you really feel like being in india. yes we even had an indian meal at the end of this day. and it tasted really good. indian food seems to be quite good when you don't have to eat it ever day.
durbar square
in the middle of kathmandu is quite similar to baktapur. a nice square with many temples. lots of shops for tourists and many sadhus running around wanting money while having their picture taken with tourists. we couldn't resist and invested some rupies into this great opportunity.
sleeping shiva
we were brought there by a nepalese study friend of our singaporian friends chin and wen. a pool with a sleeping shiva lying on a naga (snake). a very special site with meny pilgrims and no tourists. we haven't seen anything similar in india.
