Our last stop on our world tour! Our hostel was right by Union Square in central San Fran where the posh shops are. We sat there with the sun warming our faces watching the world go by nicely sheltered from the wind. The minute we left the square, it was freezing!! The wind was icy cold and we had to head quickly back to our hostel to get jumpers.
San Francisco's most popular attraction is Alcatraz as we discovered to our horror when we tried to book a ticket to go there. Our only option was to queue up at 7.30 the next morning for standby tickets.
The ticket booth didn't open until 9.00 and the sun was hidden behind fog until 10.00 so we spent 1 1/2 hours shivering in a queue for the tickets and another 2 hours waiting for a ferry with available space.
I dunno if it was worth all of the wait but Alcatraz was pretty good fun especially the audio tour but there wasn't much to keep you there so once we'd taken our stuck in the cell photos we headed back.
Obviously our Britishness must have shone through that day because we soon found ourselves in another long queue. This time we were waiting for the Cable Car and the next hour of our lives was spent in the midday sun watching the staff have a good chat amongst themselves as 4 cable cars backed up on the track.
Eventually, they slowly loaded passengers onto the cars and we were treated to the Sardine's eye view of the city crammed on the tram with our armpits shoved in the face of the nearest unfortunate passenger.
San Fran is a lovely city with some beautiful houses, great shops and of course those famous hilly streets which make it so unique if not a bit of a pain to walk around.
One night we found ourselves in a tiny little bar, met some cool people got chatting (and drinking) and ended up having a big night so our last day was very quiet. For our last night, we did get out to a nice jazz club called Biscuits and Blues and met up with Gav and Charlie who were on holiday in San Francisco as well. It was a fitting end to meet up with them on the last day of our trip and was a nice send off. It'll be funny we won't see them again until next May.
Next stop home!!! Can't believe it's all come to an end. Hope we get back alright!
