We arrived in San Diego early in the morning after our oh so comfy night bus journey! Backpacks on we treked to our hostel, it was only about 8 blocks but felt much further with our packs and lack of sleep.
Got to the hostel and we were too early to check in but that gave us time to have showers and take advantage of the free pancake mix for breakfast, Ricky rustled up some pancakes and waffles to fill us up and then we went online to see what deal we could get for San Diego's attractions - Sea World & San Diego Zoo! After checking in, and armed with our newly bought 5 day passes we thought lets go - and instead of climbing into bed like we all secretly wanted to do catch up on some sleep we headed off to Sea World.
Ricky had been to San Diego & Sea World before and he was loving seeing the city again, especially as our bus ride took us through all the cool places before finally arriving at the home of Shamu the Killer Whale.
As we had the 5 day pass we decided on a wet day and dry day at Sea World and so with today hot and our first day left our cameras at home in readiness for getting soaked- and boy did we! We did all the rides, got wet and then sampled a few beers (free you know), saw the artic exhibition and then went to the big attraction, The Shamu Show which was awesome, if a little strange as there were 4 Whales and a baby who all seemed to be called Shamu. We sat in the soak zone and got drenched!! We were pleased we hadn't brought our cameras until we walked past the dolphin Stadium to be told the dolphin show wasn't on today because a baby dolphin had been born at 7.30 that morning. WOW we were allowed into the stadium if we were quiet and there we saw mummy dolphin swimming round with baby sticking right by its side. It was amazing, bigger than we had expected and could swim so fast!
Next day we decided was Zoo day - we trekked all the way across town (to save on a bus ticket) to Balboa Park where the Zoo is located. Well the Park itself is huge and full of museums and even a Spanish Village -not quite Freila of course but cool. We finally found the Zoo and realised this was going to be a mission- even the map was enormous! We went to check out the reptiles and then saw the very impressive Sea Lion Show and then had to get the cable car as we were running out of time -to see the Polar Bears and of course the Pandas. They had just had a baby Panda born but you could only see it on a tv monitor as it was tiny, but seeing the pandas was very exciting even if the baby wasn't there. Last stop of course the Giraffes before we forced our exhausted feet to walk back to the hostel and then go food shopping for dinner before finally chillin for a few games of dominoes!
Next day and back to the Zoo, this time we got on the bus - yes the Zoo is so big it has a fleet of busses (regular size as well) to drive you round. We did the tour and found out that Ricky was infact correct in thinking there was a giraffe feeding session and we were just in time. $5= 3 biscuits so yippee I got to feed the giraffes, I don't think Steve could quite understand why I was so excited about it but it was brilliant. After this we literally trekked round to try and see everything only stopping for a packed lunch- yes we are so organised! The Zoo was amazing and we made it back to the hostel exhausted.
So tired in fact we had to have a day off the next day and have a lie in, before chilling out and checking out the shopping mall Horton Plaza and spending some much needed time on the internet! More home cooked food and dominoes in the evening .
