From Cape Reinga we drove and drove and couldn't really decide where to stop for the night. By the time we had got the ferry across to Rawene the rain and wind had set in for the night. As it got dark we drove into a place called Opononi, not even sure if it can be called a town. There was a hotel & bistro right on the corner overlooking the ocean and the guidebook said they had a backpackers too.
The backpackers was closed for renovations but the carpets ahd just been laid so we could stay!!! Yes indeed, but it was dark and late and they had a bar so we checked in and headed off for a game of pool. We were the only guests in the whole establishment and they closed the bar at 7pm. The landlord found us a TV and sent us to our room so he could lock up!
There was no wait for breakfast the next morning, and in the daylight the view was nice!
