Welcome to Wwoofing

Text written in: English

We kept driving to Kerikeri (a town we had been told was lovely - and was) and found a hostel. Then we started to try and find a new wwoofing place. We phoned one host who told us about a couple who needed workers but weren't in the book (highly suss!) We phoned them and agreed to met them the next day. So we had time in Kerikeri to explore. As my Grandma had told us of the Stone Store we headed there. Its the oldest stone building in NZ and is next to the oldest wood house in NZ- pretty cool.
Well our 2nd wwoof hosts were lovely. A couple with two young boys who are just in the process of setting up an organic blueberry orchard - and boy are they brave! So on Saturday night we moved into their beautiful house and began our first week of wwoofing! It was an eventful first night as after dinner we were sat chatting to Buffy about the orchard after everyone else was in bed and suddenly there was a bang and we were plunged into darkness. It sounded like a bang to us but Buffy thought it was a car crashing on the country road above the house. Next we heard screaming and knew she was right - as she phone the emergency services we grabbed a first aid kit and started the car. When we got to the road we found a car had smashed into the power pylon on the way to a party at the end of the road. The car was a mess but everyone was ok - only minor injuries and shock. It was pretty scary though, pitch black and miles from anywhere the ambulance took ages. Not the quiet night we were expecting!!
It was a huge shock to the system to wake up on Sunday morning ready for a 8am start! But we were saved by the pouring rain and spent the day doing household chores and learning about organic orchards. That didn't last and Monday morning came and we started weeding. 5hrs later we were aching and covered in mud!! After a shower it was of to explore Kerikeri! Well we weeded loads and mulched and once Justin was had recovered from the flu like virus that has brought the North Island to a stand still Ricky was let off weeded to help Justin build a pack house and wwoofers shed. This did mean I had to look after Reuben, the youngest of the family who was off school ill - it was nearly as tiring as weeding!
We had a wicked time and were relieved to stay with such a lovely family in such a picturesque part of NZ
