Well we couldn't come to Australia without checking out the home of the Crocodile Hunter himself - Steve Irwin. Its not as well advertised as we had expected but we finally found out where it was hiding. Its in a tiny village of Beerwah on the Glass Mountains tourist route, a very pretty part of Oz. This is apparently where Steve's Dad Bob started the Queensland reptile park in the 1970s and Steve & Terri (his wife for those of you not in the know) took over and expanded it when Steve shot to stardom.- Yeah I knew nothing of this having not really watched the TV show but Ricky I found out is a secret fanatic so I learnt all about it before we arrived!!
The zoo was AWESOME, really well laid out with excellent enclosures and really helpful dedicated staff. Unfortunately Steve, Terri, Bimbhi, Robert and Sui weren't there much to Ricky's dissappointment.(yes we now feel like we know the whole family!)But we saw a fabulous croc show with Casper the moody croc and Bluey both of whom kept the keepers on their toes!
We got close up to a pair of camels - very cool as I had never seen them this close before and then we went to check out the new East Asian exhibit. We saw 5 tigers in the very high tech new enclosure and even watched the keepers swimming with them. But the highlight for me was feeding the elephants, it was co cool they just gently take the fruit out of your hands with their hairy trunks. And yes they had wombats (yipee) the baby one was so cute and even went out for a walk when we were there.
Oh yeah back to the crocs - we saw and took photos of Agro & Acco & Snappa this was very cool and then we had our photo taken in the actual 'Crocodile Hunter' Landrover, Ricky could barely contain his excitement. Crikey what an awesome day!!!
