Well we arrived in Airlie Beach and could see that is was a travellers mecca- or waiting room for the Whitsundays Cruises. We had been recommended a campsite so stayed there for the first night even though it was out of our budget (it was nice). The lady at reception told us about the 'pub' across the road which did great food! Off we went expecting to find a nice pub , instead we found a true Aussie pub- a bookies with a bar! But she was right the food was good!
For the whole of the next day and infact the entire time we spent in Airlie we had tropical storms, rain like nothing we had experienced before. It was so hot people were still in trunks and bikinis but it just poured down then was brilliant sunshine for enough time to lull you into a false sense of good weather then it soaked you again.
After exploring the entire town that was the morning over and we really did not know how to waste the time till our cruise. We gave in and stayed one night in a hostel so we could chill outin front of the TV and dry off- bliss.
Next day we found a great campsite right in the centre of town and pulled up just after another VW had arrived. We now had partners in crime and Stimpy had a girlfriend - Muriel.
Can you believe it we are in OZ and its raining we could not believe it either. We spent many days and nights chatting to the VW owners and getting very drunk with them. Can you believe their names were Darren and Karen AKA DAZ AND KAZ which was great fun when we all introduced ourselves.
We spent a couple of days scratching our heads trying to find something to do in the rain with very little success resulting in being true Brits and just whinging about it instead.
The night before we sailed we had a free night in a hostel as part of our package, this was the night of the royal wedding so we invited fellow Brits Daz & Karen to our TV party with nibbles and Booze (rebells that we are no booze is allowed in the rooms, we could have been fined!!)and watched Charles & Camilla marry. We also found out our boat had cancelled due to bad weather so the next night we weretrying to find a boat and back on the campsite. This time the 4 of us were sat under our tarp with some wine chatting but at 9pm our very tame (honest) evening was ruined by our neighbours yelling at us to shut up. We had to move to Muriel's tarp and whisper because it was after 9pm!!!! Omigod what next- thank goodness for Daz & Karen keeping us insane!
After our boat got cancelled again for the second time we decided to upgrade to a posh boat that was definitely leaving the next day it was called The Ron of Argll and had an Italian chef on board much to our delight. So we left the campsite making as much noise as possible and booked our site for when we returned to dry land!
