Whitsundays Island Cruise

Text written in: English

On Monday we finally set sail for our cruise around the Whitsunday Islands heading on the first night for one of the bigger islands called Hook Island which is on the north end of the group of islands. After about 5 hours sailing to which Ricky actually did sail and hoist the sails up the mast (check me out like a proper sailor!), we moored in a little bay so we could have a smooth nights sleep. We stayed up till late just watching the stars and chilling out in between down pours and boy are there stars – the sky is so amazing out here!

Tuesday we woke early at 6.00am to the sound of breakfast being made and coffee being poured which is a sound we have not heard for a bloody long time now. The skipper said that today we might be able to get to Whitehaven beach which is a place every one wants to get to - it is the image everyone has of the Whitsundays. So we started heading for the great blue ocean only to be met with some 2 meter swells which turned every one’s face green. By this time Ricky was sailing the boat and starting to think it was his fault so he past the rudder back to the Skipper but shortly after the skipper had to do an about turn and head back the way we came because he felt that every one was looking too green including him!!

After another two hours sailing we arrived at a snorkel site where we were all only to glad to get off the boat. The visibility was very poor but then compared to the Great Barrier Reef it could only be expected. After this we had lunch and a little sleep before putting our wetsuits back on to do more snorkeling at a different site - this time the water was a lot clearer and there was so much more to see so far more enjoyable !! When we got back on the boat we spent some more time sailing before dinner and the most tasty steak we have ever had - full of flavour and so juicy (and cooked on a boat –figure that?) Again we spent the night on the deck chatting and star gazing (we even saw Jupiter!!!) drinking lots of wine and listening to the Decky Chris play his guitar so relaxing we stayed up till 2am in the morning. When Chris got to drunk Nikki took over guitar playing – ummmm very musical!

The next day we woke again at 6am with a little bit of a sore head so we had our breckie and headed of for a little sail to get to Langford Island which is a tiny island with a sand cay jutting out like a runway that we strolled along and took lots of photos. For once the rain held off and it was picture perfect! Then it was back on the boat and full steam ahead for the main land again.

We had a wicked time and meet some really nice people who we met up again for drinks in the bar that night and loads of laughs before swapping e-mails and going our separate ways.
