Well our 1st Valentines Day and no cards or gifts just a kiss as thats all that fits into our budget!
We met up with Kirsten, Sally and Sally's friends and went off to find the giant Budda. Its on an island all by itself really ( in Hong Kong terms its almost completely unpopulated) so we got the ferry across and then a bus up some very steep roads to the Budda and hundreds of steps. Once we had climbed them there we were stood with the Budda towering above us and a truely amazing view across the island - The wind was so strong we nearly got blown away as you can see in the photo!
We went and climbed inside the Budda and then had the experience of tea served and cooked by the monks. It was all vegetarian thank goodness as we weren't sure we would have eaten meat once we'd seen the veg! And the monks washing up is very dodgy so Sally and Ricky started the very strange and much stared at rital of washing the plates & chopsticks in the boiling hot tea! Ater we had eaten all we dared we had our fortunes told by the ancient tradition of Fortune Sticks. Put it this way Nikki's was so bad the Monk wouldn't translate it!
Next Sally wanted us to trek to the tiny fishing village of Tai O to see the Stilt Houses were the people live without electricity. We started off on what we thought was an hours walk. After 3hrs of walking down roads so steep our legs were aching it was dark and there was no village! We found a house and the lady told us Tai O was 4 hours the other way - so back up that hill!! She called us a cab and we finally made it back to the MTR station without killing Sally!
We got back to Claire's tired but soon found a new burst of energy to go and check out the Night Market and we had great fun examining all the fake designer goods, jade, jewellery and antiques!
